Door hangers are one of the most underrated marketing tools out there. They’re tangible, local, and impossible to ignore when done right. But if you’re not seeing the phone ring after a drop, you’re likely missing a few key elements that turn a “nice-looking hanger” into a lead magnet.

Here are 3 simple, powerful hacks to make your door hangers pull in more calls and customers:

1. Use a Bold, Irresistible Offer (with a Deadline)

You’ve got about 3 seconds to grab attention. The fastest way? Hit them with a can’t-miss offer — right at the top. Think:

  • “25% Off First Service”

  • “Free Consult — This Week Only”

  • “Buy One, Get One Free”

And here’s the trick: include a deadline. People need urgency to act. A door hanger that says “limited time only” gets pinned to the fridge — not tossed in the trash.

Bonus: Use bold, high-contrast text. Your offer should be the first thing someone sees from 10 feet away.

2. Add a QR Code with a Tap-to-Call Feature

Most people check their phones the second they walk inside. Give them a shortcut. A QR code that opens a direct “click-to-call” screen is an underrated conversion machine.

Don’t just link to your website. Instead:

  • Link it to your phone number using a tel: link

  • Or go one better — link to a short, 30-second video explaining your offer and what they get if they call right now

This creates zero friction. You’re making it easy to go from “hmm” to “hello, I need your service.”

 

3. Include a Clear, Stand-Out Call to Action

“Call us today” is tired. What do they get when they call?

Here are better CTA examples:

  • “Call now to lock in your free inspection”

  • “Spots fill fast — claim your discount before Friday”

  • “Questions? Talk directly to the owner now”

Make your call to action conversational and benefit-driven, and don’t bury it at the bottom. Include it:

  • Below the headline

  • On the back with more details

  • Near the phone number

The more clearly you guide people, the more likely they are to act

1. Bonus Hack: The Appropriate Quantity

Business owners using door hangers can control the ad copy, the offer, the design, etc. But, there is one thing they can’t control: The buyers’ READINESS to call back.
If a prospect who has just had their lawn done receives your door hangers, they won’t call you. Similarly, if they have a contract signed with another lawn company, they won’t call you.

Timing is everthing. Your offer has to time the prospect’s readiness to buy. And that is only achieved through a reasonable quantity of door hangers to distribute. . 

I’ve received 3 calls in June 2025 from new business owners that wanted to order door hangers. 2 of them were looking for 100,  and 1 was looking for 50. 

I told them all that their chance of getting 1 call was slim to none. My main driver is not sell more products. My main driver is for you is to be successful. If you are, you will come back and order more products. If you’re not, you won’t come back.

My advice for them was to increase the quantity to at least 1000 in order to get a chance to get a few calls back. Most people use way too few and later say: “Door hangers don’t work, it’s a waste of money and time.”

So, use the appropriate quantity if you want to stand a chance to find those prospects that are in the process of looking for what you offer!
