Poster Size Guide: Choosing the Right Dimensions for Every Project

    6 min readBy HuskerPrint Team

Posters are one of the most versatile marketing tools — they work for retail promotions, events, trade shows, and window displays. But choosing the wrong size can mean wasted budget or a sign that gets lost in its environment. This guide breaks down the most common poster sizes and when to use each.

    Standard Poster Sizes

Most printed posters fall into a handful of standard dimensions. Each has a sweet spot for use:

    • 11" x 17" — the most popular small poster. Great for storefronts, bulletin boards, and indoor promotions.
    • 18" x 24" — a versatile medium poster. Ideal for events, sales, and trade show signage.
    • 24" x 36" — a large, high-impact poster. Perfect for feature walls, gallery displays, and bold promotions.
    • 27" x 39" / 27" x 40" — movie poster size. Used for entertainment and cinematic-style marketing.

    Large Format Posters

When you need to grab attention from across a room or a parking lot, large-format printing takes over. These sizes are printed on wide-format roll stock and are perfect for conferences, retail grand openings, and directional signage.

    • 36" x 48" — a common presentation and display size.
    • 48" x 72" — large enough for stage backdrops and big retail signage.
    • Custom sizes up to several feet wide — perfect for window displays and building banners.

    Choosing the Right Size

Start by answering three questions: Where will it hang? How far away is the viewer? What is the budget?

    • Close-up viewing (under 5 ft): 11" x 17" or 18" x 24" with 300 DPI for crisp detail.
    • Mid-distance (5–15 ft): 24" x 36" at 200–300 DPI balances size and cost.
    • Far viewing (15+ ft): large-format at 100–150 DPI — the eye cannot resolve finer detail anyway.

    Orientation and Aspect Ratio

Portrait (tall) posters suit most retail and event use because they fit standard frames and easels. Landscape (wide) posters work well above counters, on building facades, and as table signage. Match the orientation to the wall or stand it will live on.

Design Tips for Any Poster Size

    • Keep one clear focal point — a headline or image that reads in under three seconds.
    • Scale text to the viewing distance — one inch of letter height for every 10 feet of distance is a good rule.
    • Add bleed (0.125") so nothing important gets trimmed off.
    • Use high-resolution images at the DPI your size requires.
